    UK-based climate technology company Airhive has launched one of the world’s largest and lowest-cost direct air capture (DAC) systems, marking a key milestone in scaling carbon removal technologies.Now operating at commercial scale, the system demonstrates how innovative engineering can dramatically reduce the cost barriers that have long constrained DAC adoption.With a capture capacity of 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, the system is expected to achieve costs below $500 per tonne—less than half the current market average. This makes it one of the most significant cost breakthroughs for DAC achieved to date.Innovative Design Driving Cost ReductionsAirhive’s DAC system is deployed at the Deep Sky Alpha site in Alberta, Canada, and uses a fluidized beds approach to capture CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. This design allows large volumes of air to be processed efficiently within a compact footprint.By combining high capture efficiency with heat recovery and reuse inside the system, Airhive has significantly reduced both capital expenditure and operating costs.

    From Pilot to Commercial ScaleAfter a year of commissioning and ramp-up in Canada, performance data has now confirmed the system’s capabilities. Airhive is currently continuing optimization efforts while preparing for further deployments.Rory Brown , CEO, Airhive “Over the past year we’ve been commissioning and ramping up our system in Canada, and we’ve now validated its performance, and we’re excited to talk about it publicly. It’s been a huge lift for the team, with a lot of hard engineering work and a lot of learning, but we’ve made fantastic progress.
    “We were the first ones at the Deep Sky Alpha site in Alberta, we started installing our equipment this time last year. Since then, a few other companies have arrived, and the site now feels lively and busy. We are now in the ramp-up phase, and we’ll continue working on optimisations into next year".
    In parallel, the company is installing a 60-tonne pilot facility in northern England, designed as an R&D platform to refine materials and process improvements. Airhive has already filed one patent related to its material advances and plans additional filings for its second-generation process.

Its approach upgrades conventional biogas systems using solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.Biogas—typically composed of methane and CO₂ and produced from waste such as manure, crop residues, and food scraps—is converted directly into clean electricity. Crucially, the process produces a pure CO₂ stream that is liquefied and permanently stored in geological formations.

    Innovative CO₂ Liquefaction and Export Terminal
    As part of the project, DESFA will develop a CO₂ liquefaction, temporary storage, and export terminal at the Revithoussa Island LNG terminal.

    Nordbex and Aker Solutions Partner to Accelerate Bio-CCUS Deployment Across Europe

    Nordbex and Aker Solutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand their collaboration and accelerate the rollout of bioenergy with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (Bio-CCUS) projects across Europe.The partnership’s first milestone, Nordbex 1, will be Sweden’s first replicable Bio-CCUS plant, set to begin operations in the SE4 electricity region by 2029.A Model for Climate-Positive Energy
    Nordbex 1 will convert forestry waste into electricity and district heat for local communities while capturing and storing carbon dioxide.
    Designed as a scalable and replicable solution, the facility will serve as a model for climate-positive energy generation.
