Airhive Launches One of the World’s Lowest-Cost Direct Air Capture Systems

UK-based climate technology company Airhive has launched one of the world’s largest and lowest-cost direct air capture (DAC) systems, marking a key milestone in scaling carbon removal technologies. Now operating at commercial scale, the system demonstrates how innovative engineering can dramatically reduce the cost barriers that have long constrained DAC adoption. With a capture capacity of 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, the system is expected to achieve costs below $500 per tonne—less than half the current market average. This makes it one of the most significant cost breakthroughs for DAC achieved to date.Innovative Design Driving Cost ReductionsAirhive’s DAC system is deployed at the Deep Sky Alpha site in Alberta, Canada, and uses a fluidized beds approach to capture CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. This design allows large volumes of air to be processed efficiently within a compact footprint.By combining high capture efficiency with heat recovery and reuse inside the system, Airhive has significantly reduced both capital expenditure and operating costs.

From Pilot to Commercial ScaleAfter a year of commissioning and ramp-up in Canada, performance data has now confirmed the system’s capabilities. Airhive is currently continuing optimization efforts while preparing for further deployments.Rory Brown , CEO, Airhive “Over the past year we’ve been commissioning and ramping up our system in Canada, and we’ve now validated its performance, and we’re excited to talk about it publicly. It’s been a huge lift for the team, with a lot of hard engineering work and a lot of learning, but we’ve made fantastic progress.
“We were the first ones at the Deep Sky Alpha site in Alberta, we started installing our equipment this time last year. Since then, a few other companies have arrived, and the site now feels lively and busy. We are now in the ramp-up phase, and we’ll continue working on optimisations into next year".
In parallel, the company is installing a 60-tonne pilot facility in northern England, designed as an R&D platform to refine materials and process improvements. Airhive has already filed one patent related to its material advances and plans additional filings for its second-generation process.Accelerating the Path to ScaleA DAC system fanAirhive is part of the “second wave” of DAC developers aiming to expand supply and drive prices down by 2030. Backed by major investors and supported by carbon credit pre-purchase agreements, the company plans to balance both carbon removal and CO₂ utilization projects.By focusing equally on technology innovation and disciplined project execution, Airhive is positioning itself as a key player in making DAC economically viable—and scalable—for the decades ahead.
Reverion and Frontier Sign $41M Offtake Agreement to scale BECCS-Based Carbon Removal

Buyers from the Frontier carbon removal advance market coalition have signed a landmark $41 million offtake agreement with Reverion , a Germany-based bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) company. The agreement covers the permanent removal of 96,000 tonnes of CO₂ between 2027 and 2030, signaling growing confidence in next-generation, high-durability carbon removal solutions.Reverion’s BECCS TechnologyFounded as a spin-off from Technical University of Munich, Reverion has been active in the carbon markets since 2022. Its approach upgrades conventional biogas systems using solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.Biogas—typically composed of methane and CO₂ and produced from waste such as manure, crop residues, and food scraps—is converted directly into clean electricity. Crucially, the process produces a pure CO₂ stream that is liquefied and permanently stored in geological formations.

Doubling Carbon Removal While Powering FarmsUnlike traditional biogas utilization technologies that capture only part of the carbon, Reverion captures all carbon from both methane and CO₂, effectively doubling removal potential from the same biogas.Stephan Herrmann , Co-Founder and CEO of Reverion: “This offtake with Frontier buyers allows us to demonstrate that our approach to carbon removal can be economically viable on top of driving climate impact. Our technology converts biogas to electricity at 74% efficiency while capturing carbon for permanent storage. We’re focused on scaling this solution globally.”With a 74% fuel-to-electricity conversion efficiency, one of the highest globally, the system enables decentralized clean power generation at biogas sites. This lowers fuel costs for farmers, adds new revenue streams, and minimizes methane leakage—a critical benefit given methane’s high global warming potential.Strong Buyer Support and Scaling PotentialThe buyer group includes leading organizations such as Stripe, Google, Shopify, H&M Group, Autodesk, McKinsey Sustainability, and Workday, alongside additional participants via Watershed.Frontier’s Head of Deployment, Hannah Bebbington Valori : “Reverion’s approach is a smart upgrade to a well-known industrial process—turning biogas waste into clean power while capturing all the carbon, not just part of it. With over 120,000 biogas sites worldwide, this approach could unlock hundreds of millions of tons of carbon removal while also improving farmer operations.”With over 120,000 biogas sites worldwide, Reverion’s model could unlock hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon removal annually, positioning BECCS as a near-term, scalable climate solution that also strengthens rural energy systems.

Innovative CO₂ Liquefaction and Export Terminal
As part of the project, DESFA will develop a CO₂ liquefaction, temporary storage, and export terminal at the Revithoussa Island LNG terminal.A unique innovation within the project is the use of cooling energy from the LNG terminal to liquefy CO₂, reducing power consumption and operating costs while enabling flexible and cost-efficient CO₂ shipping.maria rita galli , CEO of DESFA, said, “The selection of APOLLOCO2 by the EU’s Innovation Fund marks a major step forward for Greece’s industrial decarbonisation journey. This project lays the foundation for a scalable and cost-effective open access CCS value chain, helping industries cut emissions while maintaining competitiveness. DESFA is proud to play a leading role in building Europe’s low-carbon future through innovative infrastructure that drives the energy transition”.Expanding CCS InfrastructureTo connect Greek emitters with the liquefaction terminal, DESFA is also developing a 35 km CO₂ pipeline, which will initially transport approximately 3 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, with the capacity to expand to 5 million tonnes by 2034.
Nordbex and Aker Solutions Partner to Accelerate Bio-CCUS Deployment Across Europe

Nordbex and Aker Solutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand their collaboration and accelerate the rollout of bioenergy with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (Bio-CCUS) projects across Europe. The partnership’s first milestone, Nordbex 1, will be Sweden’s first replicable Bio-CCUS plant, set to begin operations in the SE4 electricity region by 2029.A Model for Climate-Positive Energy
Nordbex 1 will convert forestry waste into electricity and district heat for local communities while capturing and storing carbon dioxide.Designed as a scalable and replicable solution, the facility will serve as a model for climate-positive energy generation. Under the agreement, Nordbex will lead as project developer, while Aker Solutions will provide project management, owner’s engineering, and EPCm (engineering, procurement, and construction management) services.
